It’s September and as summer comes to a close and the kids are back in school, it is a good time to test your garage door reversal function. In the morning rush getting the kids off to school and yourself off to work, it would be horrible to experience a tragedy if your garage door didn’t reverse properly if a young child darted back through the garage door as it was closing because they suddenly remembered something they needed for the day.
Thankfully garage door systems have come a long way in terms of safety, and current garage door opener systems have an automatic reversing function.
How do you know if your garqge door opener has this reversing function? Take a look down. From the inside of the garage, you should see two (2) sensors or “photo eyes” located about 6 inches above the ground on each side of the door jamb. These sensors have a visble red or green light and they should be a steady light, not flashing. These sensors or photo eyes will detect anything that passes under the door or crosses in front of the infrared signal they send across the doorway to each other.
If you do not have these sensors, then your garage door opener is outdated and should be replaced. Garage door openers manufactured after January 1, 1993 are required by federal law to have advanced safety features which comply with the lastest U.S. standards. If you do have an electric opener with the safety feature of the photo eyes, then here is how to test the reversing function.
1st, with the garage door completely open, place a brand new roll of paper towels on the floor in the center of the door. 2nd, push the wall mount button installed in your garage or use the remote control for that door. The garage door should start to close, but then must reverse when it hits the roll of paper towels on the ground. If it reverses, then you are good to go. A good idea would be to test this feature monthly to be sure all is well. If the garage door does not reverse, then have a certified garage door repairman adjust, repair or replace the sensors, the electric opener, or the door as needed according to the problem.
