Wow, it seems like we went from cold weather to hot weather extremely fast this year!  If you are one of the many allergy sufferers, you cannot keep your home windows open.  Unfortunately, we may use our air conditioning systems most of the summer.  It is a fact that awnings reduce the heat in a home by 20%, which can help that electric bill tremendously.  As much as you may love the summer sun, after a long day of yard work or outdoor events, you also love coming home to the comfort of a cool home.  Awnings are very popular and convenient on patios and decks as well.  When the sun starts beating down mid-afternoon and becoming uncomfortable during that summer cookout, just hit your remote and bring down your awning for instant shade and comfort!

We sell NuImage Awnings.  They are state of the art retractable awnings, in the most diverse and beautiful selection of colors and patterns you could ask for!  Please check out our website www.awningsofect.com or email nuimage@ohdct.com for more information.  Or come on into any one of our offices to see our selections.

June – Garage Door Safety Month

June blog floweres

What a beautiful time of year here in Connecticut!  Our children will be out of school for the summer, lots of activities home and away from home.  Cookouts with family and friends!  Our garage doors will be getting more use now, with summer upon us.  We encourage everyone to take the time to check your garage doors for safety.

June has been designated Garage Door Safety Month by the International Door Association (IDA) and the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA), so as we spend more time outside, it is always a good idea to keep your garage door running smoothly and safely.  Keep in mind that the garage door is often the largest moving object and most-used entry point of the home, which is why the safety of this door is particularly important!

Make sure the garage door opener control button (remote) is out of the reach of children and do not let them play with remote controls.  Never place fingers between door sections.  Consider pinch-resistant door panels to help prevent accidents.

Visually inspect your garage door, paying particular attention to the springs, cables, pulleys and rollers for signs of wear and tear.  Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them.  These parts are under high tension and should only be fixed by a trained garage door professional.  Manually test your door using the door’s interior and exterior handles.  (If you have an electric garage door opener, be sure to use the release mechanism first.)  A properly maintained and safe garage door will lift smoothly with little to no resistance and will stay open 3 to 4 feet above the garage floor.  If this does not occur, then your door may be out of balance and may be unsafe.

Test the reversing mechanism of your opener by placing a 2-inch by 4-inch board in the door’s path.  If the door does not reverse after contacting the object, call a qualified garage door professional for repair.  If the opener has not been replaced since 1993, replace the garage door opener with a new one that has safety beams and auto-reverse as a standard feature.

These are just some basic suggestions for keeping your family and friends safe during the summer months to come!!

If you find any signs of wear and test and your door is just not operating smoothly, it is a great idea to have a trained garage door repair technician come out to fix any problems and to lube and adjust your door for optimal operation and ultimately everyone’s safety.

We at Overhead Door of Norwich and Tolland County and Windham County want to keep your garage door running smoothly and keep you safe.  Call us for competitive pricing on repairs and replacements.  Even if your garage door system is running well, keep it that way by taking advantage of a yearly checkup special pricing at $55 for the first door and $40 for each additional door.
