JUNE IS GARAGE DOOR SAFETY MONTH

The garage door is the largest moving object in the home and as such requires regular inspections and maintenance to keep it in its best working order. To promote garage door safety, the International Door Association(IDA) and the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) have therefore designated JUNE as garage door safety month. We here at Overhead Door of Norwich would like to offer safety tips to keep your garage door running as smoothly and trouble-free as possible.

First, start by visually inspecting your garage door monthly. Look at the springs, cables, rollers and pulleys for any signs of wear and tear. Do not try to remove, adjust or repair any cables and springs as these parts are under high tension and can cause serious injury. If parts are worn or in need of repair, it is best to call a trained door system technician for expert repair.

Likewise, you should test how smoothly your door opens manually by lifting it using the door’s interior or exterior handles. If you have an electric door opener, be sure to use the release mechanism first in order to test the door manually. The garage door should lift smoothly with little to no resistance and should be able to stay open 3-4 feet above the floor. If this is not the case or it is difficult to lift the door, the door may be out of balance and this can cause wear and tear, once again prompting the help of the garage door professionals.

Also if you have a garage door opener, you should test it monthly by placing a roll of paper towels in the door’s path. If the door does not go back up after making contact with the roll of paper towels, then you should refer to your owner’s manual for trouble shooting and/or call a qualified garage door professional such as our company for repair. If photo eyes have been installed as part of the garage door system, be sure to clean and inspect them monthly as well, so as not to disturb/break the invisible beam that is transmitted across the door’s path which is a safety feaure designed to keep the door from closing when an object gets in the way of the door’s path.

in addition to performing these tasks on your own, it is also a great idea to take advantage of a preventative maintenance program on your garage door systems. The benefits include extending the useful life of your doors and openers, increased operating efficiency, and less likely to break down which will ultimately save you money as there will be less need for costly and time-consuming repairs.

So join us in making JUNE as well as every month, a time to keep your garage doors running smooothly, safely and efficiently. To that end, we are offering a preventative maintenance service special: $55 for the first door serviced, and $40 for each additional door, with a 15% discount offered on any parts that may need replacing. Call us today at any of our locatiions to take advantage of this beneficial and timely offer.

Happy Memorial Day and Happy Start to Summer!!

Retractable Awnings (10)

Thank you to all the men and women in the military who have served or are currently serving to protect our country and its freedom. With the observance of Memorial Day we think of these freedoms of which we are given, and we think ahead to the wonderful season of summer and how we might spend time enjoying those freedoms. One thought comes to mind when thinking of being outside on these warm, sunny days, and that is the idea of relaxing under the delicious and refreshing shade of the beautiful awnings we sell. Our awnings are made of durable, weather-proof, UV resistant materials, and are available in both motorized retractable and non-motorized retractable options. We also offer for sale fabric or aluminum window and door awnings and canopies.  Lab test measurements have shown awnings will protect one from the sun’s harmful UV rays, as well as lower the temperature of the deck or patio it is covering by up to as much as 20 degrees. By blocking the sun’s rays from penetrating the house, it can also reduce cooling costs and help conserve valuable energy, making it a smart and green choice for consumers. Our awning styles, colors, and fabric choices are many, and each would be custom designed to fit your outdoor living space at an affordable price. A well-placed awning will extend your living space without the high price of costly additions, and will add thousands of dollars to the resale value of the home.  Think of how much more time you can enjoy outside on the hottest of summer days or even when a rain storm is coming through that might otherwise send you inside.

How to Improve Curb Appeal and Retain Value

Remodeling magazine’s 2014 Cost vs. Value survey shows that homeowners who upgrade their garage doors with either mid-range or upscale replacements can expect to see some of the best returns on investment (ROI) among popular home renovation projects. Even better, the survey found that garage door replacement is incredibly economical compared to other projects like family room additions, deck additions and kitchen remodels. For example, the nationwide average cost for an installed, mid-range garage door is just $1,534, while the cost for an upscale door is $2,791. This compares to room, deck and kitchen projects that can run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Down the road when it comes time to sell, the survey says mid-range garage door replacement will yield an average 83.7 percent return on investment (ROI), while an upscale garage door will deliver an average 82.9 percent ROI. Why so high? Take a look at your home and you’ll see. For many homes, a garage door comprises up to 40 percent of the façade. That means that when you replace an ordinary or old door with a new one, your home becomes the stand-out in your neighborhood.
before

afterAs in the past, this year’s survey determined the ROI for garage door replacement by evaluating the average cost to replace a basic garage door with a mid-range door model. The survey found the value of that replacement at home sale to be $1,283, or 83.7 percent ROI; an increase over last year’s 75.7 percent ROI. In the upscale home improvement category, the survey evaluated the average cost to replace a mid-range door with an upscale door and found a $2,315 value of the project at home sale, which equates to an 82.9 percent return; an increase from last year’s 75.2 percent ROI.

The study details not only the national average value returned on common home remodeling and renovation projects, but also the expected ROI in nine U.S. regions and 101 U.S. cities, so it’s easy to see what ROI you could expect in your city. Garage Door Replacement Now a Top Five Home Improvement Nationwide

ATD-GarageDoorRepair-WA03

A national study on the value of popular home renovation projects has found that replacing an outdated garage door is both affordable and one of the best projects homeowners can undertake to improve their home’s overall value. Remodeling magazine’s 2014 Cost vs. Value survey reveals that garage door replacement delivers an average 83.7 percent return on investment (ROI) for homeowners while costing around $1,500, far less than other popular home improvement projects, like a major kitchen remodel (about$55,000) or a family room addition (about $81,000). This makes mid-range garage door replacement one of the most affordable home improvements and best values that homeowners can undertake, says Joe Dachowicz, vice president of marketing at Overhead Door Corporation, one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of overhead doors and openers for residential and commercial applications. “For so many house styles, the garage door is a home’s largest exterior feature, so this is a great space to give a facelift,” said Dachowicz. “By upgrading an ordinary garage door with one that complements the rest of the home, owners can dramatically improve their home’s curb appeal at a very affordable price.” Upscale garage door replacement, with an average cost of about $2,800, delivers an 82.9 percent ROI and was found to be the least expensive upscale project evaluated by this year’s survey. As in past years, this year’s survey determined the ROI for garage door replacement by evaluating the $1,534 cost on average to replace a basic garage door with a mid-range door model. The survey found the value of that replacement at home sale to be $1,283, or 83.7 percent ROI; an increase over last year’s 75.7 percent ROI. In the upscale home improvement category, the survey evaluated the average $2,791 cost to replace a mid-range door with an upscale door and found a$2,315 value of the project at home sale, which equates to an 82.9 percent return; an increase from last year’s 75.2 percent ROI. Finding the perfect garage door to complement any house is as easy as going online to the Overhead Door website and the Overhead Door DoorView Design Center, said Dachowicz. “The Overhead Door DoorView Design Center is a great visualization tool that anyone can use to find the right garage door for any home. You can literally see what a difference a new door will make on your home,” Dachowicz said. “Optimized for use with tablets, users simply upload a photo of their home into the visualization tool, and then they can try on any door, style and door color they choose to find perfect door.” Now in its 27th year, the Cost vs. Value Report is conducted in partnership with the National Association of Realtors. Hanley Wood, publisher of Remodeling magazine, asks NAR members nationwide to evaluate a variety of home remodeling jobs and then project the ROI homeowners could expect to receive when they sell their homes. The study, available at www.costvsvalue.com, details both the national average value returned for common renovation projects, as well as the expected ROI in nine U.S. regions and 101 U.S. cities. For access to detailed renovation data on the go, an iPhone-app is also available through the Apple iTunes store.

Garage Safety Basics

The garage generally is not a safe place for an unsupervised young child to be, and it’s best to keep it off-limits to her. That doesn’t preclude taking the following precautionary measures to prevent accidents however.

Think about what’s in your garage, workshop, or storage shed for a moment and it quickly becomes clear that it’s a potentially hazardous environment for children. These spaces house not only a car, but often sharp tools and implements, toxic and flammable substances from insecticides and fertilizers to pest poisons and gasoline, perhaps empty bottles and cans, plus countless items that could fall over onto a child and cause injury. Even the garage door can be dangerous. The garage generally is not a safe place for an unsupervised young child to be, and it’s best to keep it off-limits to her. That doesn’t preclude taking the following precautionary measures to prevent accidents however.

  • Use cabinet and drawer latches and electrical outlet covers as you would in other parts of the house, and keep hazardous implements and substances safely locked away.
  • Don’t leave lengths of rope lying around or hanging down from hooks.
  • Store ladders in a horizontal position, so a child cannot climb up them.
  • Disconnect power tools when not in use. Plug locks are available that attach to cords and prevent their insertion into electrical outlets.
  • Properly dispose of any incendiary materials such as piles of old newspapers and magazines, old clothing, and soiled, oily rags. Do not store gasoline or other flammable liquids near gas and hot-water heaters.
  • Never store a discarded appliance in a garage without first removing the door.
  • Lock the car doors. Little fingers are easily crushed by a car door and there are plenty of potential hazards inside the car should a young child enter it unsupervised.
  • Use special precautions with garage doors. Garage doors are heavy and can cause serious injuries. Both automatic and manual doors can crush fingers and cause severe head injuries, even death. The safest kind of manually operated garage door has a counter-balance system rather than a long coil spring. Make sure automatic garage doors have a device that automatically stops the door or reverses it when it comes into contact with an object.
